Trekking Mount Kenya Via Sirimon – Naro Moru Route Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi - Old Moses Camp (3,300M), 9km, 680m
The adventure begins when we pick you up in Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). We then drive from Nairobi to Sirimon Park gate at the foot of Mount Kenya. Here, we’ll get our clearance to head up the Mountain.
We will begin to climb Mount Kenya by hiking through the forest, bamboo, and moorlands for about 3 hours. Once the landscape transitions from forest and bamboo to heathland, we’ll divert to our first campsite. Trekking Mount Kenya on this day will end at Old Moses camp where we’ll have dinner and an overnight stay.
The day’s hike will take approximately 3 hours and see us cover a 680m ascent.
Day 2: Old Moses – Shipton camp (4,200m), 14km, 900m Ascent
After breakfast, we climb Mount Kenya by branching left at the junction and following an uphill track towards Likii Valley and Mackinders Valley. An hour into the journey brings us to Ontulili River which flows with fresh water. Here, we’ll be able to refill our water bottles, rest for a while, and take photos of the landscapes.
We continue to hike Mount Kenya through the Moorlands towards the Liki Valley. The journey is a mix of gentle and steep slopes. Our track will eventually transition to a mostly uphill trek as we near Mackinder’s Valley.
From Mackinder’s Valley, you’ll be able to view Mount Kenya’s three main peaks (Point Lenana, Batian, and Nelion). Sirimon is considered one of the best routes to climb Mount Kenya due to the sights you’ll see on this day.
The day’s trek ends at Shipton camp, where we have dinner and rest early in preparation for the summiting day. This day will see us cover 900m ascent.
Day 3: Shipton Camp – Pt. Lenana (4,985m) – Met Station (Naromoru route)
Our third day begins early at 3 AM in order to make it to the peak and catch the African sunrise. We quickly have breakfast and begin to climb Mount Kenya heading towards Point Lenana. With handheld torches, we make our way through rocky paths to reach the peak as the sun begins to pop out from the horizon.
We watch the sun bathe the mountain, valleys below, and the snow in golden rays. It is a new dawn that finds us celebrating atop the highest Mountain in Kenya. We take photos and enjoy the views for some time.
Our descent via the Mount Kenya Naro Moru route takes us to Mackinder’s camp where we have breakfast. We continue trekking Mount Kenya through the Vertical Bog. This Bog is unique to the Naru Moru route and offers great views. We continue trekking until we reach the Met Station where we have lunch. We’ll spend the night at the Met Station cabins
The day’s hike will see us ascend 785m.
Day 4: Met station (3,000m) – Nairobi
After breakfast, we continue descending the mountain to the Naro Moru park gate. We will find a vehicle ready for us at the foot of the mountain.
We say goodbye to the mountain and drive to Nairobi.
The adventure ends in Nairobi early in the evening.
