More About Trekking Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro has three cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira, with Kibo being the highest cone. Kibo is also where the Uhuru peak lies, the Mountain’s summit (5895 m/ 19, 314 ft). Mawenzi is the second-highest peak at 5,149m and the third-highest peak in Africa after Kibo and Mount Kenya’s Batian. Shira (3,962m) is a collapsed peak but still tall enough to give any climber a challenge.

Where is Mount Kilimanjaro located?

This 3-million-year-old dormant volcano is located in Northeastern Tanzania, close to Kenya’s border and about 320 km south of the equator. The closest cities to Mt. Kilimanjaro are Arusha, Tanzania’s capital city, and Moshi; a town on the foot of the mountain. You can see the mountain from Kenya’s Amboseli National Park where wildlife is juxtaposed against the mountain’s backdrop.

Trekking Mount Kilimanjaro

It is estimated that each year, around 50,000 people from across the globe attempt to trek to the summit. Of these, approximately 60% to 80% reach the summit. However, even those who don’t make it to the peak walk away with something just as valuable: an unforgettable experience. The mountain’s diverse landscapes, dramatic scenery, and encounters with wildlife offer deep rewards to all who dare to take on the challenge, regardless of how far they go.

Although summiting Mount Kilimanjaro might seem daunting, it is a lot easier than most imagine. With proper preparation, moderate physical fitness, and guidance from professional and experienced guides, you can touch Africa’s highest point without a lot of trouble. Additionally, the climbing routes are of varying difficulty levels, thus giving everyone a chance to scale the mountain. All in all, a good rule of thumb when it comes to climbing a mountain is steady acclimatization. This is why most Mount Kilimanjaro trekking tours are 6 – 8 days long. Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Routes

There are mainly four routes climbers use to scale Kilimanjaro. Each route has a different difficulty level, but they all offer a scenic trek to the summit.

Lemosho Route: Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho route is regarded by many to be the most beautiful trail to the summit. It offers a moderately difficult climb that is thrilling for first-time hikers.

Rongai Route: This is the easiest route for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. The Rongai route approaches the mountain from the North and thus has a dry and warm climate.

Machame Route: The Machame route is among the most scenic and the hardest after the Umbwe route. Surprisingly, this route has a high success rate.

Marangu Route: Marangu is somewhat different from the other routes. It is relatively easy to trek, has a low success rate, and is the only route where accommodation is in huts. Still, it is a remarkably scenic route and was once the most popular way up Mount Kilimanjaro.

Regardless of which route you choose, you can expect professional guiding services on your hike when you climb with us.
